Matthew Collins' show at the Edinburgh Fringe, about life as a single dad, provoked a mixed response. Here are some audience comments:
Not stand-up but funny anyway...more like having an entertaining guest over for dinner.
I never want to go to their house for dinner if this is good by comparison.
Perfect entertainment for anyone with children… We would love to have him round to dinner.
Whether you're laughing at the cruel hilarity of small children or Matthew's quest for supermarket bargains, this show is great entertainment for all. He may attend my dinner.
If you like to watch home movies and listen to a single dad recount proud and unfunny tales about his badly behaved kids, this is the show for you.
Funny but not offensive. Time simply flew by as Matthew's funny anecdotes were regularly punctuated by hilarious video clips.
Whimsical and gentle… funny without being nasty or unkind.
Recommended for those with an intelligent sense of humour rather than those relying on tired cliches and rude words for entertainment.
Not mean-spirited in any way, just funny…
I took my mum and 12-year-old along… we all left smiling. Great fun.
The title of the show is in no way ironic, Matthew Collins will tell you how to defraud an upmarket grocer and exploit the young. He even shows you evidence to prove he is not joking. …The climax, wherein he explains how he allowed his two young children to busk in Key West, discovered they made money doing so and returned for not just the remainder of that vacation, but twice more since, provoked justified mutterings of moral outrage. There should be no place at any arts festival for exploitation and borderline suggestions that the audience commit a crime. A closing film of the children outlining their agreement to participate leaves a nasty taste in the mouth.
Matthew Collins is not telling the audience to commit a crime – just to take advantage of supermarkets' pricing systems. Lighten up, those people who are morally outraged by it... I took my 76-year-old mother and she loved it.
Do not take the kids – it might give them ideas...
I paid good money to be entertained, but wasn't. The woefully unfunny information about Waitrose… makes the performer seem like a stingy skank prepared to wrestle a goose off someone poorer than him at Christmas ….
An insight to a different approach to raising kids. I liked it – just thought I should say so. He seems to get a fair bit of stick.
So what if he "makes a saving " at Waitrose... their system is so badly set up that if it can be exploited, so be it... As for exploiting his kids....Well, they are old enough so, if they don’t like it, neither hell nor high water could get them busking in the USA. The show was very funny and left me wanting more.
Take with a pinch of salt and it's a fun time for all!
Highly entertaining
Cutting edge comedy this certainly isn't. But it doesn't set out to be…. Our family – with two teens – loved the show.
What a pleasure it was to escape Fringe freneticism with this disarming take on 'New' Dad! Matthew Collins doesn't try to hit you with 'in-your-face' stand-up. He simply entertains with an engaging and delightful narrative about his adventures (and tribulations) as a single Dad.
He exploits his audience, making them sit through clips of his children doing unspeakable things to frogs, fish and each other. …it has no place on the stage.
I booked this because it looked like light hearted fun and that's exactly what I got. The show was an intimate look at how many of us muddle along in the moral maze of bringing up children. Some folk have taken it far too seriously.
Hello, my name is Nicolai, I am Matthew's son and I do not think he's ever exploited me. His show is entertainment. And he is not trying to take the mickey out of me. He is amazing. Well done dad.
Congratulations and more please soon. I am off to book my next holiday and take my boys to Waitrose! You should be very proud Nicolai.
