Matthew has been bringing up his two sons alone for ten years. (Their mother lives abroad.) They are now young men, constantly challenging his male supremacy in a house that’s too small for so much testosterone.
The single dad journey hasn’t been easy. There have been fights, tears, smashed crockery and money worries. But there have also been wonderful conversations, walks, bike rides, football matches, weird meals in abundance, and fantastic foreign adventures.
When the boys were three and four, Matthew remortgaged his house and took them on a motorhome trip across America. Two years later he took them across Canada with three borrowed grannies. And when they were nine and ten they busked around Florida. Recently, they have camped in Cornwall, caravanned in Devon, youth-hostelled in the Lake District and crossed the Atlantic on the QM2.
Matthew gives talks and workshops on Fatherhood. They are realistic, practical, down-to-earth and fun. He helps run a weekly Fathers’ Workshop for prisoners but also offers ad hoc fathers’ sessions.
